The Sisters’ Annual Walking Wake to Honor World AIDS Day

Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 8 PM – 1 AM

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, The Abbey of St. Joan will be holding its 11th annual Walking Wake, in honor of World AIDS Day.

In classic Sisterly tradition, Seattle’s nuns will be choosing a celebration of life, memory, and the joy that our community has for each other. We will tour Capitol Hill’s queer community hot spots with a pub crawl, raising a glass or three to toast the memories of those we have lost to HIV, as well as, to celebrate the friends who are still living with the virus. We encourage our community to join us in our expression of love and come share a drink, a story, maybe a few tears, and definitely some laughs!

Our journey will start at the corner of Broadway and John at 8pm, where the Sisters will perform a brief dedication ceremony, and then begin the pubcrawl with CC Attles, and then continue from there. Please be prepared for cold weather and possibly rain! But know that warms hugs will be available, should you need them.

Hosting the event this year will be Sister Castaspella New. Sister Cass speaks of the Walking Wake, “Of all the events that I’ve been a part of with the Sisters, the Walking Wake is probably the most representative of who we are; We are a group of people dedicated to lifting the spirits of our community, being a voice for them, and an ear. We celebrate our community, and we are there to remember them and love them, and that’s what the Walking Wake is all about. I can’t think of anything more important than that love. I hope you join us!”

OMG! Who Arted?

Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 6 PM – 10 PM

Vermillion Art Gallery and Bar

1508 11th Ave, Seattle, Washington 98122

Do you like to draw, or paint, or just sketch and doodle? Well, if you do, you will want to enter this art contest sponsored by The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – The Abbey of St.Joan and Vermillion Art Gallery for a chance to have your art featured on the Sisters’ “Condom Saviour” packaging!

All artistic skill levels are encouraged to participate. In the Sisters’ spirit of non-judgment and fundraising, the winner will be determined by how much money a particular submission can raise through direct donation and silent auction. Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned popularity contest, huh?

Beginning October 1st, 2011 artists can register (with donation) and pick up their submission packets at Vermillion. Submission packets will contain a list of rules, image requirements, a release form and a canvas. Vermillion is located at 1508 11th Ave, Seattle.

Submissions are due by November 5th, 2011.

This is an all-age contest and event. There is no cover charge. Donations at the door will be gladly accepted. Artists under 18 will need a parent’s or legal guardian’s permission to enter.

All proceeds from “OMG! Who Arted?” go the Sisters’ “Play Fair!” program.

In 1982 as San Francisco’s health scene had hit crisis levels, registered nurses Sister Florence Nightmare and Sister Roz Erection joined with a team of Sisters and medical professionals to create “Play Fair!”, the first safer sex pamphlet to use plain sex-positive language, practical advice and humor to educate people on the responsibility of their sexual health.

The Abbey of St.Joan continues the duty of teaching the message that everyone has a responsibility to themselves and their sex partners to stay safe and Play Fair. “Condom Saviors” and “Passion Packs” carry supplies and helpful information, all of which are free for the asking.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
By William Shakespeare | Directed by Sheila Daniels

Two pairs of young Athenians escape the tyranny of rule and family to enter the earthy unpredictable netherworld of the forest. By twists and turns, the mystical inhabitants play havoc with the four as well as with an unsuspecting theatre troupe, turning everyone’s world upside down. Director Sheila Daniels returns to play with the dark shadows and golden glow of Shakespeare’s most popular comedy.

And just how is this edgy you ask? Directory Sheila Daniels challenges our traditional reading of Shakespeare’s play be casting the central pair of lovers as a same-sex, lesbian couple. Interesting… eh?
